Tree care in Northern Virginia is a calendar problem more than a budget problem. The work that keeps a mature canopy standing is not expensive in any given year — it is just specific about when it happens, and the window for most of it is narrower than people realize. A crown reduction done in April costs the same as one done in January and buys considerably less.

What follows is the shape of a year on a typical Springfield lot: what the season is actually asking for, why, and which parts genuinely need somebody with a rope.
The ground under Springfield is half the story
Before any calendar makes sense, it helps to know what these trees are growing in. Much of Fairfax County sits on heavy clay — slow-draining, prone to compaction, and unforgiving of construction. Springfield's housing stock is largely post-war, which means most of these lots were graded with equipment, and a great many mature trees are living on root plates that were compacted or partially severed decades before the current owner arrived.
That history shows up in two predictable ways. Water sits rather than drains, so roots stay shallow and spread wide instead of anchoring deep. And when a summer thunderstorm arrives after two days of rain, saturated clay loses its grip on those shallow plates. The trees that come over in Northern Virginia are frequently not the diseased ones, which is why what storm-damaged trees need afterwards so often surprises people. They are healthy tulip poplars and willow oaks with full canopies acting as sails over ground that has turned to pudding.
This is why the single highest-value thing you can do for a big tree has nothing to do with pruning. Keep equipment and parked vehicles off the root zone, keep mulch out of contact with the trunk flare, and resist the instinct to build a raised bed over the roots. Compaction is cumulative and effectively permanent.

Late winter is when most of the work belongs
December through February is the working season for structural pruning, and there are three separate reasons for it rather than one. The architecture of the tree is visible without leaves, so a climber can see unions, deadwood and crossing limbs properly. Cuts made at the end of dormancy begin closing as soon as growth resumes in spring, which shortens the window in which a wound is open. And the insects and fungi that exploit fresh wounds are at their least active.
Oaks deserve a line of their own here. Fresh cuts on an oak during the growing season, particularly April through June, attract the beetles associated with oak wilt. Given how much of Springfield's mature canopy is oak, the safe rule is simple: oaks get pruned in winter or they wait.

The walk-around that catches most of it
Once a year, ideally in late winter when the structure is bare, walk each mature tree and look for five things. A vertical crack in the trunk. A union where two equal-sized stems meet with bark pinched between them rather than wood. Mushrooms or shelf fungi at the base or on a buttress root. Soil heaving or cracking on the side opposite a lean. And dieback at the very top of the canopy, which is usually the first honest signal that something is wrong below ground.
Any one of those is worth a professional opinion. None of them is an emergency on the day you find it, which is precisely why winter is the time to look — it leaves room to schedule the work rather than pay storm rates for it.
Where the line falls between homeowner and crew
Plenty of tree care is genuinely a homeowner job. Mulching correctly — two to three inches, pulled back from the trunk, wide rather than deep. Watering new plantings through their first two summers, which matters more than anything else you will do for them. Removing small deadwood you can reach with both feet on the ground. Keeping vines off the trunk.
The line gets crossed at three points: anything requiring a ladder and a saw at the same time, anything within reach of a power line, and any judgment call about whether a structural defect is survivable. That last one is the expensive one to get wrong, and it is the reason certification matters. What the money actually prevents
Framing maintenance as an investment is the standard pitch and it undersells the arithmetic. A structural prune on a codominant union is a morning's work. The same union failing in a July storm takes out a section of roof, a fence, and occasionally a car, and the emergency removal that follows is priced against urgency rather than difficulty.
Getting a canopy back into shape afterwards is its own job, and restoring a storm-hit canopy takes longer than the cleanup does. Insurance is the part people discover late. Carriers will generally cover damage from a healthy tree that failed in a storm. A tree with visible, long-standing defects that a reasonable owner should have addressed is a harder claim, and documentation of routine professional maintenance is what turns that argument around. Keep the invoices.
None of this requires an annual contract or a standing crew. It requires knowing that most of the work belongs in six or eight weeks of late winter, that oaks are pickier than the rest, and that the root zone deserves more protection than the canopy gets attention. Trees in this part of Virginia are long-lived and forgiving — right up until the ground gets saturated and the wind arrives, at which point they are neither.
